1926 — Popular evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson is reported missing in Los Angeles. She turns up in Mexico over a month later claiming to have been kidnapped and held captive, though a Grand Jury would determine that she had actually spent the time with Kenneth Ormiston, a married, radio engineer at her church station.
1936 — Former Japanese prostitute Sada Abe erotically asphyxiates her lover, Kichizo Ishida, while having sex with him in his own hotel. After he dies, she cuts off his penis and testicles, wraps them up in paper, then will wander the streets of Tokyo carrying around her (or his) package for three days. She gets nabbed on the third day, and authorities report she's "beaming with happiness". But the story doesn't end then; as the public scandal develops, she will be sentenced to six years in prison, serve four years, assume an alias, marry, divorce (when her husband learns her true identity), become an actress and play herself in several productions of her true story, then will disappear in 1970, and no one will hear of her again.
