Craft Corner:
Make an Origami Broken Heart

The ancient art of Japanese paper folding is called ORIGAMI. People have been practicing origami for hundreds and hundreds of years. You can also learn origami!

Let's make an Origami Broken Heart. All you need to start is a square piece of paper. You can use any kind of paper that you find around the house. You can use school paper, colored paper, or even a page from one of your mom's magazines!

Cut your sheet of paper into a square and you're ready to start. Just follow the instructions below.

1. Fold your square in half across the middle, to make a paper tent.
2. Hold the tent so the fold is on top. Then fold the corners around to the back to make an upside down triangle.
3. This is the tricky part. Tuck your finger inside the upper right corner of the heart and pull the front part forward and down to make a square.
Now you have a square in the upper right hand corner of the triangle. Do the same thing to the upper left corner.
Your heart should look like this now.
front back
4. With the front of the heart facing you, reach inside the heart and tuck the inside tip forward and down.
5. Fold all four of the top corners forward and down.
6. Now fold the two tips forward and down.

7. Now turn the heart over and you're finished - you've made a broken heart!

Now dip the heart in ordinary pig's blood — ask your mom where she keeps it — and mail it to Scott Gibson, 112 Barnard Street, Apt. 3, Park Slope, Brooklyn, 11217. No need to sign your name — he'll know who it's from.
