I've always maintained that when you're gonna steal someone else's cookies you may as well eat them with a fine port. Or in this case a fine Riesling, as a recent cheater swept me out of the bars of Austin and just eighty miles west to lovely Fredericksburg. Austin and San Antonio can be just small enough to make cheating a difficult task so it's awfully convenient that this charming hideaway town lies just over the Texas hills.
Der Lindenbaum bills itself as serving authentic German cuisine, and having eaten there I can attest to this claim. The Schweinebratan ($12.95), roast pork in wine and mustard sauce, was sublime. Das Schwein was tender and the sauce thick and spicy. And the accompanying scalloped potatoes in cream sauce and side of shredded red cabbage and beets afforded the perfect compliment to the meal. Der Lindenbaum offers a decent wine and beer selection; I chose a Beck's dark... I know, not the most adventurous choice but it was a killer match with mein Schweinbratan.
It was a perfect cheating getaway - romantic and secluded. In fact the only point at which Der Lindenbaum misses das Boot is when it comes to the dessert menu; according to our server there isn't one. We couldn't really figure out how a place with food this good could overlook offering even rudimentary dessert options.
Fortunately just a couple blocks away is Clear River Pecan Co., which offers homemade ice cream, candy, and bakery goods. The decor is cute midcentury American soda shop, but the ice cream selection is far more inventive. We tried cookie dough ice cream and espresso ice cream, which were both good, but the superlative flavor turned out to be Fat Elvis, a concoction of banana ice cream with peanut butter globs.
Fredericksburg certainly lives up to its reputation for excellent food, and just a few blocks further down the road we ended the evening (and started the next morning) in a cozy bedroom at the Vintage Rose Bed & Breakfast. And that's where the real treat began. |
