Better Off

The seagull lands heavily
something rank
and rotting
in its beak.

Such a lusty treasure
it feels the need
to flap its wings and call
Look at me!
Look at me!
Look at what I have
and you do not.

Another gull lands nearby
not nearly as heavy
grabs
the stinking, dead whatever
and flies off.

The first seagull
and I
exchange a look.

Sympathy can come
from the strangest places.

My Mother Says I'm Perfect

My mother says I'm perfect.
So why do I need you?
